Soulful Swedish collective Hips deliver their smooth '80s-tinged debut "Loose Tonight"
They're from Sweden, they like a little funk and soul...and that's about all we know about Hips as they unveil their debut single.
The enigmatic collective have apparently collaborated with Esperanza Spalding, Janet Jackson and Santana so it's no suprise that "Loose Tonight" is a smooth and classy act.
From the opening piano bar chords and funky-as-hell bass, "Loose Tonight" is a track precision engineered for dancing. Once the male vocals swoop in - a mix of Pharrell's playfulness and Alexander O'Neal's sultriness - we're firmly in the '80s. Some cowbell and a keytar outro could make this a pastiche, but everything is pitched so perfectly that it's approaching an instant summer classic.
"Hips are a collective that creates feel-good music with the intention of making people dance and feel great," the Swedes tell us. "We draw inspiration from disco, soul, and funk, and our debut single 'Loose Tonight' is the track that sets everything off. It will lead the way for the upcoming releases and our vision; no matter where you’re from or where you’re going - if a song is groovy enough, it will make your hips move."
