Detroit's cosmic-trap pioneers Gosh Pith tease upcoming EP with "child"
Detroit is a city with a rich musical past. Motown made it Hitsville, USA in the 1960's as The Supremes, The Four Tops, and countless others churned out timeless classics. The raw garage rock of MC5 and The Stooges thrived alongside those immaculate productions. The city gave birth to techno in the 1980s, and hip hop pioneers like J Dilla and Eminem have called it home. It is also a city with a complicated present, standing as a monument to the juxtaposition of Rust Belt decay and Millennial optimism. Even as you marvel at the magnificence of the Opera House or the Institute of Arts, you're never too far from a burned-out home; newly renovated restaurants and theaters sit on the same streets as abandoned buildings. It's a city in transition, not what it once was and not what it will be.
It is the perfect home for Gosh Pith, who seem to both defer to and defy their musical ancestors, blending familiar sounds in a way that seems contradictory at first blush and nearly impossible to categorize on second thought. In a series of releases that includes Best Fit favourite "Window", the duo have begun to define a sound they describe as "cosmic trap". True to form, however, Gosh Pith switch it up on latest single "Child", replacing the 808's and heartbreak of "Window" with a mellow, cymbal-heavy beat. The casual ricochet of the hi-hat is the perfect complement to the reverb-soaked guitar's leisurely backstroke, and the charcoal-tinged vocal melody provides more than enough momentum to keep it all from crystallizing in place.
