SoundCloud graduate glaive flips the script with “i wanna slam my head against the wall"
Reared under the hothouse lights of the internet, North Carolina export glaive drops hyperpop track “i wanna slam my head against the wall”.
As legend has it, glaive’s number of streams increased by a meteoric 30,700,000% after starting 2020 with just one. Building an empire from his bedroom, in the space of a single year (with a pandemic thrown in for good measure), the hyperpop wunderkind has collaborated with fellow SoundCloud heavyweight ericdoa, as well as releasing his debut EP cypress grove – which more than rips up the rule book.
Flipping his emo-indebted, glitched out pop signature for a smoother ride, “i wanna slam my head against the wall” is all sunshine and rainbows on the surface – but it barely conceals universal angst, pining after serotonin and a crush whose already in a love affair with alcohol.
But make no mistake, while the verses run along at a breezy pace, the chorus is where the glaive we know and love comes into his own. Faster and faster, its like a merry-go-round as he sings the all-too-familiar feeling: “I wanna slam my head against the wall / Till I cannot feel at all”.
It’s the stage-setter for glaive’s forthcoming EP all dogs go to heaven which is out later this spring, and holds the promise of being just the start for a very new, much-needed kind of pop star.
