GIRLI gets meta in cyber-pop banger “Girl I Met On The Internet”
“Girl I Met On The Internet” is everything we’ve come to expect from scattergun sensation GIRLI.
Following in the footsteps of pop monoliths such as Charli XCX, she is smashing tumblr pop into the mainstream. “I love vintage video game chip sounds and putting them into songs is fun ‘cause it adds playfulness to the whole thing,” GIRLI tells us, referencing the 8-bit melodies underlying the track’s sing-song vocals. “This song is deffo more pop than anything I've made before, but like every song I write it has a bit of anti-pop in there in the lyrics.”
“I wish I had a romantic URL love story to tell,” she adds. “The song actually is more me dreaming about meeting someone online and it being all cute and perfect.” We can’t help but wonder how she managed to tap into the psyche of everyone who’s ever fantasised about sliding into a crush’s DMs!
When asked about the song’s queer storyline, she’s as candid and open as her lyrics. “I date both boys and girls and for me that's just a part of my life. I just happened to write it about meeting a girl on the internet rather than a boy. I thought it was important not to change the "Girl" to "Boy" when writing, because same sex relationships are definitely underrepresented in mainstream music, but I didn't deliberately think 'I'm gonna write a gay song!'.”
