Listen: Vivian Girls – Take It As It Comes
Vivian Girls have released a free MP3 of ‘Take It As It Comes’, taken from this year’s album Share The Joy. The track features tongue-in-cheek Shangri-La’s style question-and-answer lyrics about the perils of listening to your heart and not your head. The sweet lyrics, combined with the fuzzed-up guitars, and a slightly ramshackle approach to melody result in a song that is both sweet but not sickly, and cool but not cold.
Vivian Girls play music that is both a love song to, and pastiche of the pop tradition, and with ‘Take It As It Comes’, and the Share The Joy album as a whole, there is a movement towards more definition and a slightly less lo-fi sound. It’s not that they are polished now, just that they, in singer Cassie’s words, are “more psychedelic and less shoegaze.”
