Soaked in the murky waters of his travelling life, fuzz singer-songwriter Eugene Quell’s debut release pinpoints the soft, ’90s grunge sound perfectly.
“Weird Purr” defines the likeability of slow fuzz, layering lazy acoustic chord changes with an electrified melody on top; bringing the track out of the swamp. Eugene’s vocals move effortlessly from verse to verse, relaxing the listener and sending them into a dirty haze similar to the moody numbers of Sebadoh.
Quite simply, it’s one of best slow grunge tracks we’ve heard in a while, and proves hugely relatable on these dreary, lethargic winter days.
Eugene Quell’s debut EP will be available for free on New Year’s day via Sonic Anhedonic Records.
