Listen: Dominique - "It's Only You"
Every so often songs burst out of the saturated mess of Soundcloud that whack you in the face with their sheer unadulterated pop-ness. This week it’s the turn of 21 year-old New Yorker Dominique, whose debut drop ”It’s Only You” seems to suggest a girl who knows her way around one hell of a hook.
Combining distortion with a mix that leaves her vocals in line with a synth track that’s straight out of the 80s, she tells us all about the kind of love that borders on obsession, the sort of single minded adoration that only seems to exist in the emotional force-field of pop music.
Okay, so it isn’t ground breaking, and it might not win any prizes, but for a first release it’s pretty promising. Given that every new popstrel to appear this year seems to have adopted a “fake it till you make it” attitude to becoming the next knock-off FKA Twigs, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear from a girl who wants to make good, old fashioned pop tunes. Pair her up with a decent producer and I think we could come to hear a lot more from Dominique.
