Watch: Dog In The Snow – “Factory” [Premiere]
Welcome to the machine, indeed. Brighton art pop duo, Dog In The Snow’s, latest track and first issued single, “Factory”, neatly details the repetition and monotony one may slip into and accept unawares in the noble pursuit of the one they love.
-This time around, the duo eschews the jazzier tendencies of Marie-Eve de Gaulthier’s piano and Helen Ganya Brown’s spiky St. Vincent-like guitar textures found in previous songs. “Factory” is built upon a piston-pumping, motorik drum machine beat, where de Gaulthier’s serpentine piano latches right in like a cogwheel. Whirling and buzzing synths periodically provide slightly disorienting sonic diversions, keeping the tune honest. Brown’s honeyed vocals are reminiscent of Natasha Khan’s, effectively expressing naïveté and gravity, in turn, as the soundscape shifts around her.
She is front and center, as she is vocally on the track, in Eleanor Hardwick’s wonderful accompanying video, who expertly conveys Brown’s isolation visually here. She is a lovelorn ingénue, sweetly crooning, “I work in factories / just to get to know you”, as she routinely traipses through the mundane, while her world unknowingly rots and turns to dust.
Look for “Factory,” out on Tidal Wave, 3 March and catch Dogs In The Snow’s next live date 14 March at The Islington, London.
