Danny Brown: “Express Yourself” (prod. by Trampy)

On a track called ‘Express Yourself,’ it’s only natural that Danny Brown would talk about sex in a way that might make Big Boi blush (mixed with copious drug use).

The how-can-he-not-be-outta-breath, double-time rapping Danny adopted for previous single ‘Kush Coma’ is still on display here. Whether the amount of ridiculousness has been upped to match the delivery is purely based upon on how ridiculous you thought Danny was before. If you can embrace lines like “bounce that ass like a pogo/ Shake and roll like a crap game in a Las Vegas casino” and “eating on your pussy, got it squirting on your blouse” then the lyrics of ‘Express’ aren’t exactly out of the ordinary.

The track’s production, handled by Trampy, is a fantastic take on futuristic trap, with its synths lazily swaying through the bong haze. The come-and-go, skittering hi-hats only increase the hyperactive druggy paranoia of the beat.

But it’s Danny who (as always) is the star here, his unparalleled strangeness still the engine of his appeal. But, hey, we could all use a little more weird in our lives, right?
