Every now and then you chance upon a song so different that it stops you in your tracks. London duo Colo have achieved just that on the rather disconcerting, “Aubade”, premiering today on Best Fit.
Like all the songs on their debut LP, UR, “Aubade” was recorded live with plenty of room for perfect imperfections. From beats caught short of a millisecond, to intermittent wobs, the song has a natural energy that is immediately compelling. Nick Smith’s full-bodied vocals swill around a hollow palate of minimalist sounds in stunning contrast, with claustrophobic synths, frosty harmonies and experimental glitches all making their independent appearances.
“Aubade” is raw yet refined, suffocating yet vacuous, and a fine listen overall.
UR is out now via Ki Records.
