Chloe Lilac explores the disintegration of a close friendship on "10 Things"
Following the release of her sophomore EP DOUCHEBAG last year, Brooklyn-based alt-pop artist Chloe Lilac is back with her punk-infused new single "10 Things", her first release of the year and the first from her upcoming project expected later this year.
A Brooklynite since birth, Chloe Lilac first began pursuing music at the age of 13, when she would sneak out to perform on street corners across New York City. Developing her skills as both a producer and artist, Lilac began releasing music in 2017 with her debut single ‘Reckless’, which went on to crack the Top 5 in the U.S. Spotify Viral Chart. Since then, she has been honing her songwriting whilst touring alongside artists such as Rejjie Snow, mxmtoon and Tessa Violet.
While off the road in 2020, Lilac has taken to the DIY lifestyle, directing and recording two music videos from her apartment in a determined effort not to let her spare time go to waste. Marking herself as part of a new generation of artists liberated from label restraints, Lilac has used her social media platform to become a public advocate for civil and social rights causes, including the fight for LGBTQ rights during Pride Month as well as the struggle for racial justice across the United States.
The track opens with a crunching rock inspired guitar line before gradually transitioning into a more traditional, electro-driven number, and it encapsulates the pain and frustration that comes with the fallout of a close friendship. “I wrote ‘10 things’ about a bad friend I had throughout my life, and finally realizing it wasn’t healthy for me to keep them around anymore” Lilac explained of the track’s origins, “best friend breakups are one of the most painful things you can go through, especially when you feel let down by someone you trust so much".
"10 Things" highlights an artist praised for her ability to mould nuggets of pure pop idealism whilst simultaneously finding the space and energy to break down some of life’s heavier moments. With a new project due for release later this year, Chloe Lilac looks set to continue her ascent through the ranks of the pop pyramid, one scruffy guitar line at a time.
