Singer and primary songwriter Matt Messore's DIY bedroom-pop workings as Cathedral Bells have synthesised a potent strain of sticky-sweet gothic pop, and “Ethereal Shadow” is the payoff.
“Ethereal Shadow” is the dreamy new single release and closing track on Cathedral Bells’ upcoming debut self-titled EP. The project draws on all the greats of the genre, using sonics like painters use brushstrokes – with deft accuracy and unflinching artistry. The palette of “Ethereal Shadow” is an exploration of the smudged reds of The Cure, hazy pinks of Chromatics and gluey browns of DIIV. While this path has been well-trodden, you can’t help but love the elegant simplicity.
Messore says: "It took over a year working on the song “Ethereal Shadow”, and with this came a lot of change in my life. I wrote about the transitions and uncertainty of life."
