Experimental hip hop artist Brian Nasty celebrates DIY culture on “Cereal Killer”
“Cereal Killer” is the first track from London-born Brian Nasty's mixtape Pyjama Party, astutely transporting his private life into the public conscience.
The rise of internet culture has allowed aspiring musicians to make, record and share their music online, creating records without a mainstream audience in mind. This DIY aesthetic has recently found commercial success with independently-minded musicians, cultivating a broad sense of community and unique talent. Brian Nasty is part of this underground network, working alongside talented young artists such as AMA, Osquello and Theodor Black.
Amongst the melancholic rhythms and murky synths on his new track, small snippets of dialogue can be heard - placing familiar conversation amongst a violent, troubled discourse.
“This track is about when a relationship goes horribly wrong and it’s either you’re gonna kill yourself or kill the other person,” Brian explains. “You realise you’re not gonna let someone else’s toxic behaviour change you or the way you are and so, you mean to kill the sadness that follows.”
Brian skulks in the gloomy twilight throughout the track’s homemade visuals, lost in the darkness of his thoughts. Rain falls and sirens blare around him as he’s surrounded by the comforting murmur of his friends’ voices. “Love’s a losing game and I’d rather stay at home,” he mutters, wrapped in comforting cocoon of his maroon satin pyjamas.
