AWA drops another ‘90s influenced R&B jam with “Piano Song”, a highlight from her debut EP
Today the rising star releases her first body of work cry.baby. Full of exciting pop production, R&B samples and a lifetime of influences, “Piano Song” is the perfect closing statement.
Born in Stockholm, AWA aka Awa Santesson-Sey got her pop star start when she competed in and eventually won the first season of The X Factor in Sweden. At just 15, AWA’s recording contracts and commitments were too much so she took a break from music, opting to study. Eventually, she began to use her social media platform to earn money as an influencer to support her return to music flying out for sessions in London and LA.
Now she's made London her permanent home. “I like to look at cry.baby as a body of work that goes through the motions and perspective of different relationships” AWA explains. “The casual ones, the complicated, the beautiful and the most important, the one with yourself. It’s all a journey and as long as you grow a little from your experiences, you good boo.”
“Piano Song” falls into the complicated category and AWA’s still figuring out how to play this one. With a string of impressive, diverse singles AWA’s first collection of songs is true to who she is and “Piano Song” sees AWA at her most vulnerable. With its nostalgic beat and piano-led hook, it’s a departure from the rest of the EP opting for a more analogue sound complete with strings.
Elsewhere on the EP, AWA explores different variations of love songs like the club-ready “Like I Do”, a love song to herself. Another highlight and perhaps the most empowering moment on the record. No-one can love you like you love yourself, AWA knows this and has put that power into this addictive pop song. An impressive first release AWA's only set to get better.
