Australian singer-songwriter Ruel puts interpersonal disconnect front and centre on "Younger"
London born and Australian raised Ruel first picked up the guitar at age 8 and drew inspiration from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Amy Winehouse for his early compositions.
Last year he helped deliver a superlative cover of Jack Garrett's "Weathered" for Triple J's Like a Version series, as featured vocal for producer M-Phazes and he's been compared to Frank Ocean and James Blake by NYLON Magazine. That feels a little off the mark - there's freshness over intensity and the youthful singer/songwriter (he's 15!) is clearly going full throlttle on a pop sound build on a faultless blueprint.
New track "Younger" sees M-Phazes back for production and was song was co-written in LA with Sarah Aarons (who has worked with the likes of Jessie Ware, Alessia Cara and Mabel as well as having a hand in "Sex Money Feelings Die" from Lykke Li's latest). "We were talking about how friends part ways over time because of different interests or family life and I really liked that concept for a song," Ruel explains. "I definitely relate to this story personally and I feel like most people have gone through this kind of scenario too."
