Listen: American Grandma - “Paralysis”
That fight you have - the one that fills you with dread, where you feel like “this is it”- it’s done. Everything grinds to a halt and the future is but a misty haze hanging over your eyes.
The naïve melancholy emitting from American Grandma’s wafting slowcore on the aptly titled “Paralysis” deftly portrays the contradictory inertia of a life newly in flux. Still just a teenager, Jennifer Keller conveys a solemn gravity in her songwriting and vocals that appeals fully across the age spectrum. While most prodigies err on the side of braggadocio to drive home their precociousness, Keller’s undeniable harness on understatement proves that much more impressive.
Hailing from the Denver, Colorado suburb of Broomfield, Keller and her bandmates craft delicate guitar lines that juxtapose with their foggy overall ambience and Keller’s drone-like monotone. While seemingly more suited for cloud-shrouded days indoors, it’s a sound just as apropos for baring your face, closed-eyed and unfettered, to the sun at the peak of a Rocky mountaintop.
American Grandma’s latest LP, New Future, is available for download now on Bandcamp.
