With the recent release of Solange’s Saint Heron compilation; the emergence of silky smooth new talents like Kelela and TDE’s SZA; and the increased success of longer-standing artists such as Sampha, Dev Hynes, and Jessie Ware, the impact of modern RnB has never been more apparent.
Artists seem to be pushing the boundaries of this genre into experimental and fascinating areas, and are producing music on the cutting-edge of creativity. Baltimore pair Abhi & Dijon fit neatly into this group, their two most recent tracks “They” and “T.M” offering a voluptuous, melodic array of slow-jammed reverberations. “They” stands-out as most encapsulating, with stunningly mellifluous vocals, while “T.M” provides a slight switch-up, with increased percussive emphasis, more pronounced bass, and a falsetto-edged hook.
21st Century RnB is arguably on the cusp of something truly memorable. Abhi & Dijon have ensured themselves a part of this; and many will be eagerly awaiting their debut EP, set for release at the beginning of next year.
