A tortured, addictive thrill ride, Chaika's "I Fall" is not for the faint hearted

28 March 2016, 10:30 | Written by Ben Lynch

Leeds-based quartet Chaika make things somewhat simpler with "I Fall". Simpler, though certainly no less entrancing.

The new track develops the grinding, dark, and demanding aesthetic of previous releases "The Mirror" and "The Quietness".

Chaika pull from a range of post-punk and psychedelic acts, specifically those who operate within the darker regions of the genres, and, as a result, it's as mysterious as it is haunting. It's a grey area in which the band find themselves comfortably stretching their creative legs, and never more successfully than in "I Fall". It comes as no surprise then that the band recorded with Matt Peel (Eagulls, Pulled Apart by Horses, Autobahn), and his experience certainly appears to have helped the band capture a sense of volatility. Abound with repetition and sharp instrumentation, it's a tortured, though thoroughly addictive, affair.

On the track, lead singer Joe Evans said: "'I Fall' saw us writing about writing. From Philip Larkin to Charles Bukowski, the track charts the necessary enslavement of a writer to the craft; an experience which is one part ecstasy, one part terror. Abetted by the repetitive march of instrumentation, it’s a matter of stoic commitment.”
