Pop newcomer Folly Rae plays with dreamy highs and heavy lows on "Hard To Love"
Folly Rae's new single "Hard To Love" is breath of fresh air: a welcome balance of inventive and accessible pop music.
Taken from the BBC Introducing-backed soloist's forthcoming EP, the track is a moreish blend of mesmeric bass, razor-sharp trap beats, and bursts of brass that sit in weird but wonderful harmony with Rae's vocals.
Rae (real name Rachel Virtue) controls her voice beautifully, too, flitting between powerful pop delivery in the hooks and peppering the song elsewhere with bewitching, celestial oohs.
“The sentiment of the song is about being addicted to something that doesn't need you - like an unhealthy obsession and the only way to push through that feeling is to blame yourself and find flaws within”, Rae explains of the track.
Our own unhealthy obsession may well be with "Hard To Love's" addictive core. It's a brilliant melting pot of pop that's surely about to raise the heat on this promising new act.
