15 Songs For The Road by Angus & Julia Stone

01 August 2014, 09:00

The Notwist - “Kong”

I love these guys! Saw them play at Best Kept Secret Festival in Holland over summer. Was so wicked to see “Pick up the Phone” live after all these years. From the moment the song starts it makes me feel good - the beginning of journey. We’re always on a journey somewhere.

OK Go - “The Writing’s On The Wall”

Good little kissing and dancing and drinking song.

Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band - “Lovin’ You Baby”

He’s so real, this guy. His voice holds his truth of how deeply he lives for love. I believe him.

Karate - “Original Spies”

This whole album (Some Boots) is amazing. It’s such a cruisy road trip sound. Takes me to summer in Sydney, living in the cottage with Angus. Driving round in my boyfriend’s old commodore station wagon with the boards in the car. Days at the beach…nights on the veranda under the stars.

Modest Mouse - “Dramamine”

“this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about” - Lots to think about on the road.

Joy Division - “Transmission”

Epic song. Makes me want to dance. His voice!

The Roots, Joanna Newsom and S.T.S - “Right On”

This song has to be in here for touring. I always start my runs with this song in my ears. The snare roll, into the beat. It gets me excited for the run. Good feeling.

Blake Mills - “Wintersong”

Great lyrics, great beat - and really out there, interesting sounds. The boy/girl singing section is such a nice build up. Reminds me of Fleetwood Mac. The melodies and harmonies in this section are really beautiful.

Abdullah Ibrahim - “Ishmael”

It’s a nice trippy 15 minute “close your eyes and dream song” while the bus takes off and we’re trying to sleep but can’t sleep.

Steve Smyth - “Written Or Spoken”

We toured with Steve a while back. He is a beautiful singer, writer and person. I love hearing his voice. Reminds me what we’re all doing out here.

The Fresh & Onlys - “Waterfall”

It’s lyrically very straight forward, I like that about this song. The words don’t break my heart but the sounds and the voice are really beautiful and emotional. It’s a good mix.

Led Zeppelin - “The Rain Song”

This is another good drift away song. It’s open and effortless. The strings are so peaceful and beautiful. A friend of mine told me to listen to this one night while I was trying to get to sleep. It helps.

Bonobo - “Cirrus”

I like this whole record. The North Borders - it’s good for running but also just nice to do nothing to. Sit at the window and drift.

Sia - “Fair Game”

I love her voice - it’s an extraordinary instrument and she uses it so gracefully. She is who she is and that comes through in everything she does.

Olafur Arnalds - “Near Light”

For watching life go by. For walking down streets. For watching people in places I’ve never been and may never go back to.

Angus and Julia Stone release their forthcoming Rick Rubin-produced album on August 4th via Virgin.
