The electro-pop sound of Muscles seems to be secreting itself across the UK at the moment. The Melbourne based act has been taken the world by storm recently, selling out shows across their native Australia and getting the NME and the BBC to say nice things about them.

We thought we’d catch up with the band and find out what makes them tick…

For people out there than have never heard of you. Give us three reasons why they should…
Cause it’s more fun than most bands, do you like really shouty electronic music and out of tune four part harmonies? Do you want to feel like you’re 15 years old again? Then this is for you!

Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?

I must have been young, hard to remember, it was going to happen sooner or later.

What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
It was a success! 50 people came to see my first show, It was just me and a piano and I played for 20 minutes and the sound was horrible and I was really nervous.

How much artist control do you possess over your music? Are you interested in how the album looks and how you’re marketed?
I created my album before I signed with Modular, it is everything. They helped me with artwork.

What music are you enjoying right now? Any recommendations for our readers to check out?
What albums am I listening to, I just downloaded the new Snoop Dogg album, haven’t listened to it yet though. Also this awesome dude ontour with me called The E.L.F., sampled psychedelic pop, kind of sounds like The Avalanches. Been listening to Simian Mobile Disco’s album a lot lately, and James Holden’s The Idiots Are Winning.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Being from a small country town I used to work in a farmhouse where we had to pluck feathers from chickens, we had to inject ink into the feathers to create old timey pens, then we’d eat the chickens for dinner. Also I worked on an orchard picking pears during Summer, pears are also my favourite fruit, next to grapes.

Tell us a joke.
What’s black and white and runs through the forest?
A fridge with a leather jacket.
