20 Questions with…The Acorn

08 May 2008, 12:00
Words by Rich Hughes

The Acorn have been continually playing on our stereos at TLOBF Towers ever since a Canadian friend of ours lent us some mp3′s towards the end of last year. We’ve been completely bowled over by them in fact. Here’s hoping for them to get a UK deal in 2008. In the meantime, we managed to track down main man Rolf Klausener to pitch our notoriously devilsh 20 Questions to him…

1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Chud, moisture, tongue.
2. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
Young Turks 7″ – Rod Stewart; I can’t remember how I got it, I was 5 yrs old.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Dim Sum.
4. What’s on your rider?
We’re really hoping to get one of those soon. Once we do, i’m thinking: sake, german weiss beer, prosciutto, fruit salad, that day’s Globe & Mail or New York Times, shiatsu massage, a 2 litre bottle of Orangina, a 7 week-old kitten (preferably male).
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
Pace, eat light, keep my hands warm, evacuate bowels.
6. What’s your favourite song to play live?
Currently, ‘Crooked Legs’, ‘Brokered Heart’, ‘Even While You’re Sleeping’ & ‘Flood pt.1′.
7. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Science fiction movies, Guitar Hero, Cyndi Lauper, over-eating, 30 minute long trips to the can with a good book or celebrity gossip magazine.
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
Aw c’mon. That doesn’t even make sense.
9. What was the last album you bought?
Nat King Cole and his Trio – After Midnight.
10. If you could rid the world of one song – what would it be?
The entire snarl-rock catalogue post-1992 (so no Creed or Nickleback, but early Pearl Jam and STP would remain).
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Jose Gonzalez or Lou Diamond Phillips.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
The Clash, Paul Simon, Califone, The Band, A Tribe Called Quest.
13. If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favourite album?
Yo La Tengo – I can hear the heart beating as one (it sort of changed everything for me).
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Torching our costumes after a halloween gig in Lethbridge Alberta last Fall; or, playing “piss in the grocery bag and hang it off the rear view mirror until the driver swings it off onto the passenger’s lap via erratic driving” on the way to Kingston in early 2005.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Losing my virginity, eating hot dogs with my Dad in Montreal, chocolate fondue, summertime lake swimming in Ontario, playing music…but really, if i was about to die, i’m sure i’d be thinking “holy fuck, I’m about to die; this blows donkey tits”.
16. What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
Local Ottawa musician and mentor, Flecton Bigsky once told me, “someone will always lend you money, usually at an inflated rate but there is no way anyone can ever lend you more time…remember that and find the time. it was yours to begin with.” I try to keep this in the back of my head, most days.
17. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
My beard.
18. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
Like a Rolling Stone – Greil Marcus / film: No Country for Old Men.
19. What three things could you not live without?
The sun, the earth, co2 at less than 280 ppm or alternatively: my duvet, Pho, scrabble.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I’m lactose intollerant.
