20 Questions with… Wildbirds & Peacedrums

We liked them on record. But we loved them live. Wildbirds & Peacedrums occupy their own time and space, an amazing blend of folk tinged wonder with ethereal, almost chant liked vocals… We caught up with the duo of Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin to find out if they could hack our 20 Questions…

1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Free, raw, powerful.

2. What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
Mariam:- Europe ” The Final Countdown” when I was 5 with my mother in the food store.
Andreas:- Michael Jackson “Dangerus” at the recordstore in Strömstad.

3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Fat food and coke and sleep and then another party.

4. What’s on your rider?
Nuts, fruit, red wine, local beer in bottles, lots of waterbottles and a vegetarian dinner.

5. How do you get ready for a live show?

Feeling out the space, getting a grip on it, so you feel that you can fill it up. Not eating to close to the show, that makes you to heavy and sleepy. Maybe a glass of whiskey. And a bit of focus and privacy like 1/2 hour before the show.

6. What’s your favourite song to play live?

A:- There is No Light
M:- Doubt/ Hope

7. What’s your guilty pleasure?
A:- I’m totaly hung up on racer bikes right now and have it on my mind all the time.
M:- Buying too many stockings in different colours.

8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
The goat, cos it have horns and can make a bloody mess with them.

9. Who’s your favourite new band at the moment? Tell us a bit about them.

A:- Orthodox – new spanish splendid band on Southern Lord.
M:- Little Dragon – groovy beautiful Gothenburg band.

10. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
M:- a gorgeous manga cartoon girl.
A:- A musical with Christopher Walken.

11. Dead or alive, what 5 acts would play with you at a festival?
Maria Callas, Earth, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coeman and Mats Gustafsson Trio, James Brown, Diamanda Galas with a Big Band.

12. If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favourite album?

A:- Second half of Revolver.
M:- Joni Mitchell Blue.

13. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
After our car burned down on an island outside Estonia, we had to drag the trailer by hand on to the boat to Finland.

14. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?

M:- Every cat I have ever met.
A:- My first handrail with skateboard.

15. What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
A:- Lean your back to anything and put your both feet to the ground, always.
M:- Breath.

16. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
A:- my feet couse they look so strange.
M:- my brain couse I’m so smart.

17. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
M:- book: Frida Kahlo (Walker Art Center), movie: BBC:s Planet Earth (DVD-box).
A:- book:The Rise and Fall of Phil Spector (Mick Brown), movie:BBC:s Planet Earth (DVD-box).

18. What three things could you not live without?

M:—pretty shoes—crispbread—my friend Malin.
A:—ipod——nail scissors—Nils Oscars brewery.

19. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.

M:- I’m lefthanded.
A:- I had to wear a canvas helmet when I was a kid beacouse of my uncontrolled running.
