A punk guide to Bristol by IDLES

Bristol punks IDLES tell us about the best bits of their home city ahead of their eagerly anticipated set at Simple Things Festival this weekend.

Best Music

Bristol is the best for bands: Scarlet Rascal, The Naturals, Spectres, Milo's Planes, St. Pierre Snake Invasion, Giant Swan, Lice, Human Bones, Falling Stacks, Goan Dogs, Plastic Mermaids, Rhain, Fenne Lily, The Broken Bones Gentlemens Club, The Armchair Committee, Repo Man... the list goes on but my memory is guff. All bands serve as formidable forces in what they do and not one of those bands could be mistaken for another.

Best Venue

The Louisiana is not just the best venue in Bristol but arguably one of the best in the UK. The staff are one big family and they look after you like one of their own. Giovanni and Mary run the show and have done for years, putting up bands for decades with a beautiful warmth. If you're lucky you'll get to try Gi's famous arrancini. Mig, their son, is the engine of the operation and has graciously helped us to no end and may like us. The sound is impeccable, manned often by a Texan terrier called Francis - he'll chew your ear off about sound if you let him, and epitomises the passion of the home it is. This venue is a dying breed in this country and I'd be devastated to see it go like so many small venues. Go.

Best Food

The best place to eat in town is Katie and Kim's on Picton Street, hands down. They have a no-bullshit menu with freshly baked treats and the best breakfast known to man. If you get in quick you can try their Portuguese tarts which is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The two in charge as named are also in a wonderful punk band called Auto Bitch. Do it.

Local Hero

Pat Somers.

Best Sights

I'd say if you want to see something other than the obvious, Spike Island is a great modern art gallery not too far from the equally shit-hot Arnolfini; both hold amazing exhibitions and the surrounding area is perfect for walks with people you'd like to walk with.

Best Bit

The best bit about Bristol are the people.

Worst Bit

The worst bit are the same people behind the wheel of a car. The people of Bristol suddenly become utter twats when driving, seriously.

Best Bristol Word

Asdal: it's Bristolian for Asda.

Idles are playing Bristol's Simple Things Festival on 22 October - they'll be playing London In Stereo's stage at The Sportsman's Club. Find out more.
