For his latest album Benny Sings is doubling-down.

His previous plethora of efforts – including 2021's Music – have all delivered a jaunty, piano-and-beat led canvas on which he effortlessly sets to work. Young Hearts takes up where these left off, and finds songwriter and producer Tim van Berkestijn honing in on his greatest strengths.

With Kenny Beats on production this time around, this fact does little to leverage away from Berkestijn's trademark sound. His same airy California-cool beats and smooth vocals blossom, loyally rooted in his lane, much like a summer breeze floating down a languid coastline. Beats' influence on Berkestijn comes in the form of ironing out the airy patchwork quilt into a concise exploration of human interaction and narrative.

Another wealth of ludicrously catchy tunes, Berkestijn has indeed mastered the art of the ear worm. Remi Wolf comes along for the ride with backing vocals and features ("Pyjamas"), including the defiance of the titular opener. Each track acts as its own scene in a grander vignette of love and life, as if Berkestijn has posted up on a bench and watched the world go by, an invitation he extends instantly.

Purity, and often naivety, lead the way ("Love Will Find A Way", "The Only One"), but its lamenting in the awkward state between love and loss that Berkestijn ("Distance", "Take Your Time") manages to find a new wealth of meaning.

Clocking in at just over 25 minutes, the runtime is short enough for the breeze to remain cooling rather than becoming a chilly nuisance, as these virtuous factors could lead to a sickly feeling but in this small dose, Young Hearts do seemingly run free.
