There’s always been a comfortable place for Beatenberg within the South African music scene.

Widely regarded as the most celebrated bands to originate from the country, their debut album The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg, and in particular their song “Pluto,” both released in 2015, still continue to be heavily applauded (the track and album also won the band numerous South African Music Awards).

But how does a band with melodies made for a warmer and more glistening climate, translate overseas? One of the most alluring qualities of the trio is their ability to portray different rhythms and sonic styles into instantly soul-soothing pop music. This is an ethos that has carried over gracefully into their latest offering, and is beginning to capture the hearts of people across the globe (their upcoming UK tour is mostly all sold out, for example)

In just 6 tracks, Beatenberg lay out a mellow yet captivating autumn soundscape. As one track flows effortlessly into the other, it’s easy listening personified. The whistling sway of opener “Time Machine” combines with the bounce of “Le Pain Quotidien” which then blends into “Symposium,” with an instrumental section to die for. It's the kind of instrumental section that sounds like the rolling waves across a sandy beach, but also a quaint bike ride through undulating countryside, or any scenic cliche you can think of. In fact, dotted across the EP are bursts of instrumental brilliance that tie it all together.

Short, sweet and delightful, On The Way To Beatenberg is an endearing collection of just what Beatenberg do best. Despite what the title might suggest, the EP doesn’t feel like a stepping stone in a journey to be made, it feels like they have already reached their destination.
