Back in January, we featured Portland, OR psych outfit, Rare Monk’s, new single, “Splice”, as Song of the Day. We are now pleased to premiere a remix of that track by Turtle, the nom de plume of Glaswegian electronic artist, Jon Cooper.
Last we heard the original “Splice” signing off, it was charging warp speed through the stratosphere – its closing “unabashed, thunderous blow-out”, as we lovingly referenced – and now Turtle has given it a nudge into orbit. The remix opens with a stark, eerie synth straight from the Twilight Zone. Once it gets its astral bearings, Dorian Aites’ vocals waft in, joined soon after by deep throbbing bass and brisk hi-hat.
The Rare Monk original provides Turtle an ideal blueprint to mollify and expand the track’s possibilities while still remaining sonically tethered to it. What impresses is Turtle’s knack for paradoxically spinning the song into orbit while also grounding it with a pair of glittered dancing shoes. Though, one must only hope for Sir Richard Branson’s dreams of space tourism to materialize to access this club.
Turtle’s latest EP, Who Knows, is available now via his Bandcamp site and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter. The remix is available to download for free. Catch Rare Monk at SXSW next week before their date at Hoxton Square in London 3 May.
