CLAVVS' "Violet Sea" is a boldly minimal taste ahead of forthcoming EP release

21 March 2019, 20:30 | Written by Pip Williams

With a brand new EP dropping tomorrow, Brooklyn-based duo CLAVVS (pronounced "claws") drop tantalising new teaser track "Violet Sea".

The pair, who met at a houseparty, have already released two full albums of material together in the space of a few short years. New EP No Saviors – which closes with hypnotic mega-hit "Lay Back" – sees CLAVVS inject a new sparsity into their addictive electronica. "Violet Sea" is a glittering example of the restraint they have been cultivating for this record, with a gorgeously pared down arrangement complemented by vocalist Amber Renee's confident yet hushed tones.

It's a brave step to acknowledge that less is more – particularly in the world of pop music. As a duo known for their rich, lush soundscapes, this holds particularly true for CLAVVS. If "Violet Sea" shows us anything, however, it's that this risk pays off a hundredfold when it's done well.

"Violet Sea" is out tomorrow, as part of the No Saviors EP.
