One of Britain’s finest songwriters, Slowdive and Mojave 3 man Neil Halstead has eked out a solo career on a trio of incredible record marked by skill, sensitivity and invention.

As the primary creative force behind one of the most underrated bands of the nineties, Halstead is responsible for composing one of that decades best albums too, the staggeringly sublime Souvlaki.

His solo work isn’t out of character with Slowdive’s sound – Halstead’s ability to wring a mood, a feeling, a setting from a guitar and a lyric is undisputed and last year’s Palindrome Hunches was his most enchanting release to date. 

We met Neil earlier this week for a session take on one of that record’s best cuts, ‘Tied to You’. Watch it above.

Rapidly rising singer Indiana displays opposing forces of fragility and strength in her new single ‘Smoking Gun’ which will be released on 1 June.

The gentle, innocence of her vocal tones, crafted in between minimalist production flashes, is belied by an underlying intensity and vindictive subject matter.

Indiana takes on the role of femme fatal to great effect, which is brought into focus visually with the dark and ever so slightly unhinged video accompanying it.

The Nottingham based artist has recently announced her inaugural live dates where she will be joined by a full live band.

That unmistakable kick of riot grrrl rock is prominent on ‘Work For The City’, the first single from Brooklyn’s JAN.

Taken from her self-titled debut, the single to be released by Enclaves, feels like it’s cut straight from the heart of America’s Pacific Northwest.

Having been produced by John Goodmanson (of Gossip and Sleater-Kinney acclaim), the track comes with an exclusive b-side remixed by Kentucky’s own Dawn Landes.

With over two and a half million streams (and counting) of current single ‘This Head I Hold’ over on YouTube, Electric Guest today reveal a brand new music video for the track.

Filmed on location in a small town in the Kostroma region of Russia, the video shows the town’s dancers giving a unique performance to the track, which was actually discovered by one of the teenagers in the troupe who had somehow found the track online and downloaded it despite the slow dial-up internet in their village.

Produced by Danger Mouse, ‘This Hand I Hold’ is released on May 27 via Warner Bros.

Mariah Carey and Miguel rummage through a bag of R&B music video cliches and pull out ‘inexplicable motorcycle ride’, ‘lingering shots of random female body parts’, ‘vintage cars that nobody’s allowed to drive’ and ‘lens flares that are meant to represent the sun and/or summer’.

They put them all together and give us the video to their recent (and quite brilliant) new collaborative single ‘#Beautiful’. And, you know what, we still think the video’s pretty great nonetheless.

We were genuinely taken aback by the startling depth of young Londoner Freddie Dickson‘s debut track ‘Shut Us Down’ last month. A surefooted march through melodramatic realms stewarded so commandingly by Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey of late; the track announced Dickson as the dark horse of British pop-noir this year.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter surfaced once more this week with the stirring video for ‘Shut Us Down’. The Charlotte Rutherford-directed clip projects sepia-edged family film onto the faces of Dickson and his cherubic female co-star. His despondent sighs of, ‘Is your love still strong enough?’ sounding more purposeful than ever before, hovering over the pensive beats and poignant visuals.

Dickson will release his debut EP later this month and performs live with a full band at Ginglik London tomorrow night.

Riding a wave of praise generated from their brace of 2012 singles – released on DIY labels Almost Musique and SWAYS Records – Manchester outfit MONEY have now  been gobbled up by Simon Raymonde, becoming the latest addition to his Bella Union stable. 

Their haunting, reverb-smeared sound has been polished up on album teaser ‘Bluebell Fields’ but that’s not to say their idiosyncratic romanticized voice is on the path to losing any of its authority. Perhaps not as cryptic, or bleak as their previous releases; what ‘Bluebell Fields’ lacks in echoing atmospherics, it more than makes up for with breathlessly beautiful guitar progressions, lilting vocal hooks and shuffling percussion.

Paired with Fun Adults man, Dan W. Jacobs’ esoteric, part-illustrated visuals, it’s a cleaner but no less impassioned composition from the Mancunian cabal.

The National jam out in a tiny room with a little kid in a suit in their video for ‘Sea of Love’, the latest track taken from their new album Trouble Will Find Me.

That’s pretty much the most accurate description of any given music video ever. Really.

Going on the visual evidence presented in ‘Pleased’, Joe Flory – despite going under the pseudonym of Amateur Best – isn’t one for unnecessary self decoration.

Though surrounded by all sorts of human oddities (such as co-stars Cardboard Box Woman and Strange Bulbous Clothing Woman), Parry himself croons a wistful electro-pop love tale dressed like he’s walked in off the street, or rather, is still on the street; he spends most of his time sipping a coffee and trying to control a dog rather than paying attention to any of the ensuing peculiarity.

Come the end, Flory stands in what may as well have become a nightmarish nightclub, uncomfortable with the company but right at home with his music.  It’s a look that suits him.

The prolific DJ Koze unveils the video for his collaborative track with fellow German producer Apparat, off his exploratory genius, his Amygdala LP.

Not much else can be said about DJ Koze that hasn’t already. Embodying so much more than just a style of music, DJ Koze elicits a feeling; this dreamed up world of limitless possibilities, one that grabs and shakes you, then swallows you whole.

Butterclock is back with an 80’s themed invitation to the video for her lead single, ‘Holograms’.

Canada’s doomgazing trio No Joy dive deep into the abyss with the absorbing new video ‘Hare Tarot Lies’.

Taken from their album Wait To Pleasure, the track swells as heavy drums boom in the foreground while the band’s signature fuzzy, glossed up guitar lines sweep in.

The video depicts an alcohol and drug fueled trip where party goers slip in and out of reality to see streaming rainbow colours and demon animal heads lurk in a smoked out night club. This is all before being submerged beneath water.

Experimental and thought-provoking, Rangleklods emerge from the Berlin underground into the playful light of day with intelligent new track.

With entirely suitable ‘Control’, wonderfully glitching monochrome visuals accompany the layers of manufactured sounds alongside a pair of intuitive vocals from the Danish duo.

Hypnotic synth lines are married with the obsessive pictures and deliberate movements to create an entirely moreish journey.

Under the Autre Ne Veut name, Brooklyn’s Arthur Ashin found a voice for his music with this year’s Anxiety – his second long-player – marking the transition to vast and fully-realised experiments in R&B, moving away from the bedroom sound of his first album.

Ashin’s recent shows in the UK got us all hot under the collar and before he departed back to New York, he recorded a fine take of last November’s single (and standout Anxiety track) ‘Counting’ which you can watch below.

Its title, ‘Sweet Warm Dance’, just about sums up this new one from Laki Mera, which utilises a gorgeous vocal over the top of careful combinations of electronic sounds.

The ambiguous video that accompanies the track is as intriguing as the Glaswegians’ use of rhythm and the successful pairing of manufactured refrains alongside picking guitar and gently catching melody throughout.

Stare deeply into these kaleidoscopic visuals with its equally fascinating soundtrack, as a Best Fit Premiere above.

Producing ambient electronica stripped-backed to its bones, Ryan Vail‘s ‘Fade’ is awash with carefully crafted analogue noise, while the accompanying visuals bring the dark subtext to life.  

Glitching, manufactured rhythms, warm piano and a heart-beating kick-drum play out underneath a vocal melody that, itself, fades away to a breath as it utters the words.

Although there is an undercurrent of concern, it is the track’s video that darkens the mood as we follow a disconcerting snapshot into the difficult life of very obvious outsider. Fade away for a moment with this new one from the Derry-based producer.

Tennessee twosome brotherun tapped into our adoration of low-key electronic pop earlier this month with their debut drop ‘Wishful Thinking’.  The Tillery siblings return today, bringing with them an appropriately minimalist accompanying video for the peacefully meandering track.

Set against a starry backdrop, the kaleidoscopic visuals bring to life the muffled kick drum thumps, sprawling harmonies and spidery guitar twirls of the melody through reflective symmetry. Bathed in flickering monochrome, the mirrored shots resemble the inky photographs passed between patient and psychotherapist; adding an extra layer of intrigue to the already pensive and dreamy nature of the piece.

South London two-piece Elephant  have gone from strength to strength in 2013. New single ‘Skyscraper’ oozes a confidence built on self-consciousness, a delicacy born of fragility; the duo appear to have cast off the shackles of their stormy past once and for all, unleashing bags of personality in the process. Their rejuvenation continues with this beautifully shot video for ‘Skyscraper’.

Focusing attention on ice-cool lead vocalist Amelia Rivas  delivering her candied verses; the David Richardson directed clip is also cut with flickering candlelight and lightly wafting curtains which echo the dreamy, vaguely calypso guitar motif and choppy bass ripples of the track. The pretty, desaturated film represents another purposeful step toward their full-length debut on Memphis Industries and we can hardly contain our excitement.

Norwegian pop behemoth and Best Fit favourite Annie makes her long awaited return today with a brand new song and video which preceeds a new EP, produced by long-term collaborator Richard X.

‘Tube Stops and Lonely Hearts’ is released this coming Wednesday and, according to Annie is “inspired by the rave scene in Bergen”.

This is the first release from Annie since 2009′s classic (but shamefully overlooked) album Don’t Stop and was initially hinted as having a March release in a recent interview with Norwegian publication Bergen Puls. The star has supposedly been working on new material since 2010 but until today, has failed to deliver anything but rumours and anticipation.

However, the wait is finally over and the results are unsurprisingly exhilerating. All hail! The (real) Queen of Pop is back.

“I was in Las Vegas with [American Juggalo director] Sean Dunne to help him shoot a commercial for a reality tv show, explains Loose signed-Nasvhille boy Jonny Fritz, “and we got bored with that very quickly and Sean offered to buy a ton of fireworks, go out into the desert and fire them at me while I danced my ass off.”

Thus marked the concept for the ‘Goodbye Summer’ video, accompanying the lead track from Fritz’s third longplayer Dad Country and the first not to bear his previously-assumed “Corndawg” surname. Dad Country sees the re-christened singer-songwriter’s playful take on alt-country by way of Laurel Canyon reach a perfect balance. The album was produced by Fritz along with Dawes‘ Taylor Goldsmith.

Cork School of Music student Peter Lawlor aka Replete dropped his eponymous debut this month and it wasn’t long before we were drawn like eager moths to his flickering low-frequency beats. Lawlor has resurfaced today with the accompanying visuals for EP track ‘Wait For You’.

Filmed by fellow Irish natives Mycrofilms, the video unfolds the tawdry tale of a hungover reveller recounting the previous night’s events from the comfort of his endearingly scruffy bedsit. Things take a decidedly seedy Donnie Darko x ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ turn for the worse when the protagonist begins to trip out, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy as he awaits the girl’s return. Lawlor’s taut, looming production proves the ideal compliment to the overwhelmingly intense atmosphere building throughout.

Never one for understatement, Jared Leto’s Thirty Seconds to Mars return this week with a video that’s the very opposite of restrained.

With a warning that the clip for ‘Up In The Air’ has been “identified by Epilepsy Action to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy”, we’re subjected to a barrage of  images ranging from the sublime to the, erm, utterly ridiculous, with a fun quota set to ‘batshitcrazy’. We were teenagers once, and we’re going to bet you were too. For their latest (and definitely NSFW) video ‘Dancing Anymore’, London trio Is Tropical have found one such teenager – giving a whole new meaning to the song’s title.

In it, the (kind of inexplicably) French boy embarks on one of the most bizarrely symbolic instances of self-pleasuring probably ever committed to the medium of music video, and in one fell swoop destroys his hopes of ever making it as an actor. It starts off innocently enough: boy finds himself in a Stacy’s Mom-esque fantasy, big house, conventionally attractive middle aged woman making slightly provocative gesture with the pool pump. He’s left alone; so naturally jumps around with Billy Elliott ballet jumps, tinkles on the grand piano, has a swing of the various golf clubs and medieval sword ornaments around.

Before we know it however, he’s smoking in the master bedroom. The pixel pornography of his luxury “experience” that follows pretty much has to be seen to be believed, preferably not at work. Maybe this is what the X-rated French remake of Home Alone would be like. After a pretty grotty end to his Aloe-Vera sponsored fantasy, which takes in everything from mermaids, to house sized vaginas, to sex in a warzone, he gets on with the (ahem) job at hand efficiently and industriously. The pool’s clean, everybody’s happy.

Is this really The Knife’s new single?  Is this really its new video?  Are the Knife still a band?  What is a band?  What year is it?  Who’s the president? Who even knows anymore.

With the brilliantly baffling Shaking The Habitual confusing the hell out of even its most ardent supporters, there is a sense to The Knife at the minute that if you don’t “get” what they’re up to, you can piss off.  You’d suspect that some sort of joke was being played on the listener if the levels of earnestness and attention to detail weren’t both sky high, which certainly applies to the album’s each and every track.

Up until now, the videos for its songs have followed suit; they’re densely disturbing and darkly comic short films that add yet more layers of curiosity to the duo’s increasingly peculiar music.  ‘A Cherry On Top’ though is… basically just like viewing two bits of green-on-pink graph paper through a kaleidoscope for nearly nine minutes.

YouTube commenter ‘mrchaser’ echoes the thoughts of many with his review – “Are you joking, is barely a song….. Where are the Knife of Heartbeats an Pass this on?” – but should probably stop waiting for the return of The Knife he knew and loved.  The order of the day here is less melody and more detuned zithers, distant droning sirens and what sounds like double bass strings unravelling.  You only need to watch the first 10 seconds of this ‘video’.  But sorry, you really should listen to all of it.

The New King Of Australia™ and painfully handsome / talented young devil Flume returns with a brand new video for ‘More Than You Thought’ – one of the many highlights from his self-titled debut album, out now via Transgressive Records.

London-dwelling Northern Irishman Daniel James unveiled his stirring new song, ‘The Stone and The Hollow’ earlier this month. We’re delighted to premiere the track’s overwhelmingly despondent accompanying visuals today.

The follow up to ‘Stand With Me’ and ‘Jackdaw’ finds James on increasingly introspective form, softly cooing, ’This place is a dust bowl/And you’re blinding me,” with a cherubic lilt not dissimilar to Dan Smith, vocalist with oft-maligned indie pop outfit Bastille.

Indeed a glaring chart-friendliness permeates ‘The Stone and The Hollow’ and while the  resemblance to Bastille may prove too cloying for some; James actually exercises his poppy tendencies with a degree of careful consideration. He doesn’t resort to cheap production tricks like pompous synth riffs, or tacky bass wobbles to appease; instead electronic flutters, tweaked acoustics and bounding tom-toms aid the melody’s ascent but it’s in his sweetly soulful intonations where this project will truly find wings.

After dealing with almost everyone with a verified Twitter account, Azealia Banks has now turned her wrath on the cops in her predictably outlandish new video for pun-heavy single ‘Yung Rupunxel’.

The track is set to appear on Banks’ upcoming debut album Broke With Expensive Taste, which – as ever – is expected “soon”.

Liverpool’s Wave Machines match the video-game synth sound of the latest single from their sophomore record Pollen, with equally futuristic visuals.

The plodding layers of electronic sounds are neatly married to the floating journey from a Jurassic underworld all the way to the edges of the universe, as smooth vocals sore over the deep pedal rumblings. Our exploration feels safe and tranquil, with only very gentle dissonance hinting at destruction; however, a falsetto-heavy crescendo emerges almost guiding the animation to an unexpected and disturbing conclusion.

The closing-stages bring to mind the likes of, Post War Years and The Flaming Lips and offer a unnervingly calming soundtrack to the catastrophe. Fly ‘Home’ with this Best Fit Premiere above.

Another fine export from Australia arrives today in the shape of one KLP (Kristy Lee Peters) and the video for new track ‘Revolution’.

Lifted from the EP of the same name, Revolution is the first official solo outing from KLP after spending the past two years working as co-writer and guest vocalist for the likes of Chairlift, Lykke Li, Pnau and Adam Bozetto.

Produced by Cassian and DCUP, KLP proves she’s more than capable of solo status with ‘Revolution’ providing a ballsy and relentless statement of intent. One to watch.

One of the 15 artists handpicked by Best Fit as ‘One To Watch‘ in 2013, South East London teenager Rainy Milo makes her return today with the first track to be lifted from her debut EP Black and Blonde.

The first official follow-up to last year’s self-released Limey Mixtape, Milo’s rich honeyed tones are back in force with this super smooth interpretation of The Clash’s classic hit ‘Bankrobber’. Speaking of the cover version, the 17-year R&B starlet said: “I wanted to try cutting that record with a Rainy Milo twist and when I did it for fun everyone reacted so strongly I decided to put it on the record and make a video for it”.

The Black and Blonde EP is set to drop via Milo’s own label Limey on 22 April.

Featuring members of (prepare yourself) Brakes, Restlesslist, Clowns, Muddy Suzuki and Field Music, as well as art lecturer/published poet Gary Goodman, come Brighton dream poppers Milk & Biscuits.

Although now surrounded by a pretty impressive supporting cast, the band’s intention wasn’t always as inclusive. Initially the collaborative bedroom recording project of Matthew Davies and Max Erle, the duo first started making music above the pub owned by Davies, reportedly “the smallest pub in Brighton”. Since then they’ve joined locals Big Salad Records to release mini-album Balcony Times in 2011, and have garnered a high profile fanbase that counts Marc Riley and Edith Bowman amongst its numbers, in the lead up to first release proper Spirit Nap.

They couldn’t have timed this first taste of the album better. ‘Hairstyles’ is a track brimming with a springtime optimism, throwing its doors open to the sun with a gleeful grin, and their peddling of simple, pretty pop. It keeps itself securely on the right side of saccharine, with an twee aesthetic that seems genuinely carefree and pleasant. With a video that looks like pretty much the best day ever, they’re happy not to take themselves too seriously. As the temperature rises, 2013 is bound to involve a lot more fun with these ragamuffins with their playful summer vibes.

In the vein of the song’s refrain – “haircuts don’t define me like you do” – we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, so get to know these guys in the video below. Warning: it contains (prepare yourself again) finger painting, eating loads of donuts, consequently jammy fingers, squirrel feeding, ice cream machines with ALL THE SAUCES, elephant shaped topiary, trumpets, wearing about eleven coats in what looks suspiciously like the corner of Rokit, tropical fish, cocktails in fun glasses, tambourines, instagram filters, caricatures, gold-keyed hand organs, bobble hats, balloons, the fair, (vocalist Davies as) a vinyl DJ with a 70s barnet, wall art, and a bird mobile. If you dislike fun, it’s probably not for you.

Recent Best Fit Recordings signings NONONO today reveal the accompanying video to new song ‘Pumpin Blood’.

Released last week  in Scandinavia through Warner Music via iTunes and Spotify, the stream of the track has already garnered well over 60,000 plays and reached the Top 5 of Hype Machine towards the end of last week.

‘Pumpin Blood’ will get a UK / Europe release later in the Summer months. In the meantime, their debut single for Best Fit Recordings is available to pre-order now on limited edition 12″ vinyl. Frank Ocean has diverted attention from the newsfeed-flooding mammoth that is Coachella by releasing his new video for Channel Orange highlight ‘Lost’.

The clip sees Ocean recording, travelling, performing live and alternate between looking ecstatic and seeming a bit tired from all the jet-setting. Must be a hard life, eh?

Hanni El Khatib collaborates with Dan Auerbach in this Yours Truly session recorded in The Black Keys frontman’s Easy Eye Studios in Nashville.

In the video below L.A resident El Khatib talks of how the idea for he and Auerbach to work together was formed when the pair met in a bar in Paris. He goes on to comment on the slower pace of life in Nashville and how that aids the process of creating music.

Elliphant has had a good week and it just got better…

In relation to her last (rather outstanding) video for recent (again, rather outstanding) single ‘Down On Life’, Katy Perry randomly tweeted on Wednesday:

Pop royalty acknowledgments aside, today sees another ‘bad ass’ video from Elliphant appear online in the shape of ‘Make It Juicy’. Katy isn’t the only one enamoured with this young Stockholmite. Watch the brand new clip above.

In honour of the extended re-release of his debut album, Ark, Halls  has released a typically sombre new video for album track ‘Reverie’.

For all of the crystalline beauty of the album’s depressive insularity, upbeat it ain’t. So true to form, the new video is as doomy and gloomy (read: black) as you might expect. It only adds to the haunting mystery of the track, a fragile hymnal summing up the wrought, bleak passion of the album (read the Best Fit review here). The extended version of the album, released by No Pain in Pop, comes backed by both remixes, and live versions of tracks, backed by a full choir and strings for a session recorded in St Luke’s Church.

British producer and vocalist Obaro Ejimiwe, better known as Ghostpoet, has dropped the first video from his upcoming second album.

The track, ‘Meltdown’, comes accompanied by a suitably nocturnal night bus narrative, and a haunting guest female vocal from Woodpecker Wooliams. It follows on from free download, ‘MSI MUSMID’, reportedly penned in honour of a dream involving befriending dim sum and noodles, and first premiered on Gilles Peterson’s BBC 6Music show.

Both tracks are taken from Ejimiwe’s upcoming sophomore effort, entitled Some Say I So I Say Light, due to be released 6 May through PIAS. The record was co-produced by Richard Formby, and follows Ghostpoet’s Mercury nominated debut, Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam.

The new Queen of promiscuity, NJOMZA returns with the first cut from forthcoming mixtape Gold Lion. 

Between posting revealing photos of herself and retweeting every single mention of her name – she somehow  managed to find the time to film an accompanying video to mixtape opener ‘Lonely World’.

The brainchild of New Zealand-born Portland, Oregon resident Ruban Nielson, Unknown Mortal Orchestra have eked out a powerful reputation in a very short space of time.

Through two stellar records that confidently skirt the space between lo-if, pop and psych, Nielson’s knack for intelligent fusion has raised the band’s intelligent sounds to a level that resonates  among both critics and fans. Nielson’s both a student of music and a maker: UMO’s sound is littered with an awareness of the great milestones of art pop music, from The Beatles to Beefheart.

Ruban met up with Best Fit back in February and cut two tracks with our sessions team.  Here’s the first – a laid back ‘So Good At Being In Trouble’, which the band dropped as a single earlier this year.
