Air France - No Way Down

Posted on 24 October 2008 by Billy Hamilton

For a country that’s five times smaller than Blighty, Sweden’s recent output of pretty-pink pop pickers is remarkable. Escaping the mainstream banality of - the hyperbolically bloated - ABBA, gorgeous tunesmiths like Jens Lekman, The Concretes and  Peter, Bjorn & John have filtered into the hearts of both snot-nosed musos and tune-hugging mainstreamites with their clutterless, pursed lip  melodics.

Air France sign UK deal. Album due in September.

Posted on 30 July 2008 by Rich Thane

Bit of an exclusive here folks. The Swedish production duo Air France have just inked a deal with our good friends over at Something In Construction (home to Loney Dear, Christian Silva and Other Passengers). The deal is so fresh in fact, that the contract was only signed yesterday (!). The duo, from Gothenberg have previously released two EP’s; On Trade Winds from 2007 and the recent No Way Down which, if you care about such things, received a whopping 8.6 rating from Pitchfork. Must be good then eh? Well, yes - it bloody well is.

Air France create intelligent, dreamy dance music at its very best - filled with lusicous samples, tropicala beats, gorgeous vocals and an seemingly effortless pop sensibility. What is it with Swedish folk and their abbility to carve out pop classics? I swear they put something in the water over there..

Aggressive Henrik and Gentleandhumble Joel (best stage names ever?) will be over in the UK for some DJ dates at some point in the Autumn - more details when we get them. The two EP’s will be repackaged as an album which is due out in September.

The duo are currently working on a remix for ex-Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman alter-ego Taken By Trees.

Incidentally, an exclusive track from the No Way Down EP will appear on this Friday’s mixtape. So look out for it. It is, in a word, GENIUS.

Something In Construction night - The Old Blue Last, London 14/04/08

Posted on 07 May 2008 by Peter Bloxham

In case you didn’t know already - TLOBF are hosting a free mixtape called Building with Strings from the folks down at Something In Construction records. It’s actually frigging excellent and anybody who’s anybody has already downloaded it, so you might want to get your act together and get it yourself before someone brings it up at a party and you embarrass yourself by being the only person there not cool enough to know who’s on it. Anyway, the launch for it was at The Old Blue Last – an e-mail tipping me off about some free tequila and a free gig had me scurrying down there like the freeloading, music-loving boozehound before I could finish reading it, I can only assume that TLOBF intended for me to write something about the night also… Continue Reading

Posted on 04 April 2008 by Rich Thane

You’ve probably already guessed by now but we, at TLOBF love new music. A lot. That familiar feeling of sheer joy when you stumble across a brilliant new band? The tingles in your stomach, the need to tell everyone who’ll listen about them? That’s what drives us and is the very reason that this site exists. Which is why, we’re thrilled to be hosting this exclusive FREE mix by the fine, fine people at Something In Construction records. They know a thing about new music too, you know. The nineteen tracks contained on ‘Building With Strings’ all present something new, fresh and very exciting. Allow SiC head honcho David Laurie to take your hand and guide you through the mix.

Established in 2005, Something In Construction has released all kinds of music from the UK, US, Sweden and Australia. Folk to disco, rock to hip hop. Depends what moves us on the day, we don’t have a plan, we don’t have a type. We know what we are doing and we are goddamn proud of all our bands.

We like surprises. Mainly we like pop music. LCD Soundsystem, Duran Duran, Operator Please, Black Angels, Subtle, Husker Du, Emmy The Great. They’re all pop music to us.

We like surprises and we like songs. We like things that are beautiful and strange. We might like you. To be fair to you, if you are reading this here, then we will probably have something to talk about. Write to us, buy us a beer, tell us something. We like hearing from people. People are fun. Mental but fun. We also really like Chinese food. Don’t you? We like to just order lots of starters. Really though. You hungry?
