Maxïmo Park commence recording third album

Posted on 27 October 2008 by Rich Hughes

Maxïmo Park have commenced work on their third album with producer Nick Launay (Talking Heads, Kate Bush, PiL and Nick Cave) in LA.

On recording the new album, singer Paul Smith said: “We are (fairly) hard at work on the new album with a man called Nick Launay, who has worked with a lot of legends and he’s just finished the latest Yeah Yeah Yeahs album too. We’re hoping his magic powers will rub off on our new songs… Up to now we’ve been going through songs, it’s been a long process, but it feels tantalizing now we’re recording them. As we’re in the Valley, there aren’t many distractions (especially since I can’t drive), although there is a cable channel that shows English, Spanish and Italian football. I’ve already set my alarm to watch the early Premiership matches…

The whole affair is going to be quite stripped down compared to the last album because we don’t like to repeat ourselves. Our producer Nick thinks it’s a dance record, and who are we to disagree? Don’t be alarmed though, we won’t be donning face masks and gore-tex like Altern-8, or dancing like electric monkeys. Apart from Lukas.”

Various artists – ID08 Independents Day

Posted on 30 August 2008 by Chris Marling

In theory, this is a great idea. Get a bunch of known alternative bands to do a cover version for CD1, then get them (and some record labels) to recommend a bunch of ‘new’ bands, and fill CD2 with songs by said recommendations. In theory.

In the wider context, Independents Day 08 was a worldwide event raising money for the independent music community, as well as some charities, which included the largest ever auction of independent music memorabilia on eBay, a series of one-off music shows and retrospectives across TV and radio, plus this CD. Its all very worthy, and you can check out more details at www.independentsday08.com

Maximo Park - Corn Exchange, Cambridge, 07/10/07 [Photo Review]

Posted on 10 October 2007 by The Line Of Best Fit

Whilst they might have hit the sophomore slump with recent album Our Earthly Pleasures, there’s no denying that their debut was a perfect slice of post-punk pop and one of my favourites of 2005. They also put on one of the best lives shows around as our photographer Valerio Berdini discovered on Sunday night…
