TLOBF met Shearwater bandleader Jonathan Meiburg at the tail end of the band’s European tour. Read the full, hugely insightful transcript inside.

Shearwater – The Golden Archipelago
Evolution, God and ecology; simply put: ‘The Golden Archipelago’ is a crowning achievement by a genuinely underrated band.

Julian Plenti – Club Academy, Manchester 2/12/09
Despite repeated cries for ‘Take You On A Cruise’ from one desperate member of the audience, Paul Banks opted to use his Julian Plenti moniker to explore the new territory hinted at on this year’s ‘Skyscraper’ record.

Cold Cave – Love Comes Close
Like a club-friendly flipside to Fever Ray. As nights get longer and winter draws in, it’s worth tracking down; Cold Cave are a lot warmer and more alluring than the name suggests.

Kurt Vile – Childish Prodigy
Kurt Vile’s latest has all these cool aesthetic choices, vocals through a megaphone, slacker vibes, grainy electric guitar theatrics, off-the-cuff cool; but it’s not quite all there for Simon Gurney.

Girls – Album
A debut that doesn’t quite deliver on the band’s formative flashes of genius. If nothing else though, ‘Album’ proves that Girls might just be the greatest sixties revivalists there has been since the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Kurt Vile announces ONE OFF London show in December
Kurt Vile will be playing a ONE OFF London show at The Lexington, London on 15th December. I’m excited, and you should be too.

Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs
On their 12th album ‘Popular Songs’ Yo La Tengo get the balance beautifully right between their experimental and indie dream pop. James Dalrymple reviews.

Jay Reatard – Watch Me Fall
Watch Me Fall is mostly a very buoyant album, definitely poppy, with just the slightest hint of that insistent punk edge showing through to add zest to the songs.

Matador Records signs Cold Cave
Matador Records have announced that they’ve signed the hotly-tipped Philadelphia outfit Cold Cave and will be re-releasing their debut long-player Love Comes Close worldwide in November.

Kurt Vile signs to Matador, gives away new track download!
Matador Records have announced that they’ve signed Philadelphian troubadour Kurt Vile and will release his new album in October.

Sonic Youth – The Eternal
Sonic Youth deliver a greatest hits package of their best ideas, but with unfamiliar songs.
