On record, Left With Pictures sound like a quintessential English band. Their songs stay just the right side of twee with flourishes of whimsical chamber pop - a breath of fresh air in the currently over crowded sub genre of Alt Folk/Anti Folk/Nu Folk (whatever you want to call it). We recently gave their Secretly EP a whopping 91% on the TLOBF-richter-scale - all you need do is listen to the track we gave away on last months mixtape to understand why. It’s lush. We love it so much in fact that we’ve asked the band to be a part of our first TLOBF Club Night which is being held at Old Blue Last in London on 20th October. The trio will be joined by their pals (and equally talented) Fireworks Night and the magnificent Leisure Society. DJ duties will be with Sweden’s Air France, who are flying in especially for the show. Oh, and it’s free entry too. More info here.

But back to the task in hand, a last minute email to TLOBF Towers tipped us off to a special and rather intimate performance by Left With Pictures at East End boozer The Slaughtered Lamb. We sent our faithful snapper Lucy Johnston down there to capture the action. Apparently it was a wonderful evening, looks like it too if the pictures are anything to go by.. And we’re just loving the bunting. Like I said, quintessentially English.

‘Secretly’, the title track from this interesting little EP, is one of my favourite songs from this year so far. A world away it might be from the restrained majesty of Fleet Foxes or the pounding cacophony that Nine Inch Nails have continued to peddle successfully this year, I like it just as much. It’s quite twee – some would perhaps go as far as to say cheesy – but its sweet, subtle strings, whimsical style and infectiously charming sentiment make it as affecting as just about anything else I’ve heard lately, which is saying something. Whilst the rest of this five-track EP doesn’t quite match the opener’s quality, this is a very solid, competent, clever and fun record from a very promising band. Continue Reading

A band that are currently making many a TLOBF staff writer weak at the knees; Left With Pictures‘ new EP Secretly is an enchanting stroke of chamber pop genius. The band have actually been around since 2005 and have previously self-released two EP’s, plus a single ‘Bows and Arrows’ from last year. It wasn’t until last years End Of The Road festival though that Left With Pictures were eventually picked up by a label. Organ Grinder records first saw them perform at the festival and couldn’t believe they weren’t already signed. That soon changed though, and almost to a year to the date of their first meeting Secretly gets its release on 29th September.  To give you a bit of a taster of what to expect you lucky so and so’s can download an exclusive track ‘Super-8′, available on our current September mixtape here..
