Phantogram
Remix Artist Collective (RAC) is coming out with Vol.2 on March 4 and if you have never heard any of their stuff, prepare for some delicious delights. Vol. 2 features Phantogram, Phoenix, Washed Out, Surfer Blood, Suckers, Deloreon, and Ruby Coast. Check out the remix of Phantogram’s ‘When I’m Small’ available to download exclusively from TLOBF, then head on over to their website for a plethora of remixes to whet your appetite for the upcoming Vol. 2 release.
What RAC is allowed to do might be considered criminal, not because they are remixing songs from other artists, but rather because the remix versions subtly alter the original mood and tone of the artists vision; the criminal part is that the remixes are usually brilliant, perhaps stealing some of the thunder of the original. André Allen Anjos’s brain child avoids mashing up songs into bits and pieces. Rather, remixing occurs through a holistic approach where a kind of re-birth, or regeneration transforms the songs into something completely new, while honouring the original.
The Phantogram track we are previewing can be best summed up as an electro beautification project. The thick and heavy trip-hop beats that are Phanogram’s staple are replaced by a smooth pulsating rhythm combined with creamy synth textures completely avoiding any sharp scratchy bits the original may have provided. What’s left intact is Sarah Barthel’s soft and eerie vocals which shines through beautifully amidst the minimalist hi-fi production. Enjoy!
