May 4th  sees the release of Dear Reader’s debut album Replace Why With Funny via City Slang (Lambchop, Calexico) which follows the release of their single ‘Dear Heart’ out on 20th April.

Hailing from Johannesburg, Dear Reader are Cheri MacNeil and Darryl Torr, who met and formed Dear Reader four years ago. Produced by Brent Knopf (Menomena), it is heartache combined with MacNeil and Torr’s love-hate relationship with Johannesburg that lies at the heart of Replace Why With Funny.

Dear Reader take their name from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. “I love the way it’s written in the first person”, MacNeil explains “and every once in a while she addresses you with a ‘dear reader’. I like that sense of connection between reader, writer and plot. That’s what we’re interested in when we’re making music: connecting with the people who are listening, commiserating with one another”.

Amazingly, you can stream the album in its entirety via the City Slang website by clicking here.

Having already supported Andrew Bird, Dear Reader will play the following 4 consecutive nights in London next week including a support slot with current hot ticket of the moment: Fanfarlo.
