SOTD #118 // How To Dress Well: 'Ecstasy With Jojo'
There’s a certain momentum rushing Tom Krell (aka How To Dress Well) forwards. On the back of seven self released EPs, exposed earlier in the year, he’s got publications from across the globe singing his praises, with thousands of others appreciating his dysfunctional approach to complicating pop music and giving it a new face.
Part of a forthcoming double A-side single, ‘Ecstacy With JoJo’ is Krell’s most instantly recognisable work to date, in so much for the fact that it samples Michael Jackon’s ‘Baby Be Mine’. However, a scatterbrained song structure thrown against the signature sample, coupled with the misty-eyed below-the-deep production quality places it quite some distance from MJ’s original.
Krell’s distinctive falsetto sounds more at ease when compared to earlier work such as ‘Ready For The World’. A great thing indeed. Make no mistake: this will be the breakthrough song that establishes him as a substantial, consistently ambitious musician.
