SOTD #55 // Twin Sister: ‘Lady Daydream’

By Phil Gwyn30th April 2010

The whole eye-gougingly cringy “MAN, what are they putting in the water in Brooklyn, RIGHT?!?!?!” exclamation has become an enormous journalistic cliché, although I gather that it is an attempt at humour. Right… Anyway, to explain a cliché with another cliché, the only reason that unfortunate sentences such as the one above are being flung around like the wise meditations of Wilde is that, to be honest, it’s just completely true. Brooklyn, for one reason or another, seems practically incapable of producing groups that do anything less than embarrass every other trailing region of our globe.

Twin Sister are just another piece of blindingly obvious evidence to support this theory. Spilling from the sage pages of Weekly Tape Deck like the completely holy and perfect union of White Hinterland and 1980s’ synth, Song Of The Day “Lady Daydream” is smoothly concocted with a respectful nod to the past in its simple melodies and brooding atmospherics, and a nudge to the present with a facelessly efficient rhythm that hums like a spaced out update of The xx.

Not content with just being just musically brilliant, Twin Sister are also almost indecently generous, giving the entire EP away for free here. Listening through will leave you feeling like some sort of confusingly legal musical criminal; perhaps, to quote Twin Sister, “it could all be a dream.” But it’s not. It’s just another outrageously talented band from Brooklyn struggling to have their frustratingly superior voice heard above all the mounds of tired acts tugging the internet’s ears for  a few seconds of attention. And if you listen to only one of those voices in the next month, just let it be Twin Sister’s.

[...] Having seen the incredible reception that Twin Sister are receiving from seemingly anyone who hears their music, it’s likely that they’re not going to stay an undiscovered talent for long. Hardly surprising when their free EP “Colour Your Life” is so, so good. Here’s what I wrote about it for The Line Of Best Fit, originally here: [...]
