SOTD #44 // Mountain Man: ‘Animal Tracks’

By Richard Thane12th April 2010

First brought to my attention via the consistently excellent Gorilla vs. Bear back in October last year, I’ve been following the progress of the Vermont based trio Mountain Man for some time now. From the handful of songs I’ve heard, there is literally nothing not to love about the songs of Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Amelia Randall Meath. Comparisons to First Aid Kit’s shiver inducing close vocal harmonies will no doubt occur, but Mountain Man’s sound and inspiration seems to hark back to the very traditional beginnings of American folk music rather than the more contemporary folk stylings of their Swedish rivals.

Having become a trusted home for acts with their influences planted  firmly towards the more traditional pastures of America (see: Fleet Foxes, J. Tillman, The Acorn, Midlake, Laura Veirs and Pearly Gate Music), London based independent Bella Union have announced Mountain Man to be their latest acquisition. The debut album, Made The Harbour is set for release on June 14 and if today’s Song Of The Day is anything to go by we could be in for something very special indeed.
