Post-rock is a much maligned genre, and with good reason. Most post-rock is shit, relying as it does on a well-worn formula that amounts to “play this chord quiet for a few minutes, then play it REALLY LOUD, then quiet again. And fade. Classic tune lads.”
Denmark’s Sleep Party People have all the hallmarks of post-rock, without any of the twattery. ‘A Dark God Heart’, the first track from their forthcoming album We Were Drifting On A Sad Song, is rather like a demented lullaby. Sing-songy melodies and helium vocals conjure a particularly unsettling claustrophobia, before distorted guitars crack it all open again.
We Were Drifting On A Sad Song is out later this year on Blood and Biscuits. Stream ‘A Dark God Heart’ below, and watch the video on our sister site Ja Ja Ja.
