Fanzine – Roman Holiday // Song Of The Day #337
There’s not a lot of bucks in music anymore, it seems. This fact becomes truly evident when you see Twitpic photos of your favourite bands drinking the same kind of beer as you and sharing your joy in nabbing some reduced item bargains at Sainsbury’s. I guess only Wayne Coyne is living the dream nowadays. And man is he living it up enough for the rest of us.
Therefore it’s more important than ever for bands to supplement their music with added goodies for the masses, in an attempt to stop illegal downloading and to steer things back to the intimacy previously enjoyed between artist and fan. We have Jeffrey Lewis drawing comics to accompany his releases, Los Campesinos! have set up their own fan club, just earlier today we posted a release from Ben Sommers that has it’s very own book with it and London fuzz-rockers Fanzine supplement each musical offering with it’s very own stapled paper magazine full of words and pictures. Just too bad the band couldn’t come up with an adequate name for this kind of product, huh?
But this isn’t to say that the music doesn’t stand up on it’s own; Fanzine prove that their music can stand alone with the accompanying staples removed. That’s why the band’s new single ‘Roman Holiday’ is today’s Song Of The Day. It’s a real lo-fi, high reverb stauncher – setting the group up to be one’s to watch for the next year.
‘Roman Holiday’ is part of a double A-side 7-inch release, along with track ‘My Stupid Brain’, to be released via Fat Possum on 7 November.
Fanzine are on tour with Yuck and Unknown Mortal Orchestra throughout October and November. The dates can be found here.
