Delphic's James Cook unveils Polish/Japanese disco-inspired project, Boredom, with single "Geometry"

It's not every day that you're pitched something inspired by "anything from Polish disco to beautiful '80s Japanese re-releases or Paradise Garage mixes". Boredom - the new side project by Delphic's James Cook and Melodic Records label manager Andy Moss - more than delivers on its promise of interesting influences.

Revelling in a plus-two-minute opening of squelching bass and oscillating synth, "Geometry" suitably warms the listener up for a slow but steady feed of catchy cow bells, classic '80s tom rolls, swirling, dark electronics and deadpan vocals.

It's the result of two minds bonding over music despite being miles apart. Cook is based in Amsterdam while Moss lives in Salford.

“We’ve been emailing each other tunes we liked for years,” explains Cook. "The common thread was always real musicianship woven into electronic, danceable tunes… that hint of a human being in there making mistakes that computers don’t.” Boredom began with recording in Salford and was finished up in Amsterdam.

The fusing of two minds across borders had clearly worked well on this impressive debut single. "Geometry" is an accomplished piece of twisted disco with enough darkness to get the mind thinking and enough thrust to get the feet moving. We're already hankering for more.

Boredom's debut single "Geometry" / "Turn Your Head" (12" and digital format - including Panthera Krause and Sandrow M remixes) is released on 30 September via Melodic Records. Pre-order now.
