New Zealand/LA electronic trio Space Above release the darkly churning “Fall Through” [Premiere]
Space Above’s origins as a self-described “space tech” collective emerged from Los Angeles with the meeting of two New Zealand musicians: Aaron Short, producer and member of The Naked and Famous, and Sam McCarthy of Strange Babes. With the addition of LA-based co-writer and vocalist Maddie North of So Below, the experimental trio launched their shared vision. Their darkly hypnotic new single “Fall Through” premieres today.
The track is built upon a backdrop of churning synth distortion and careening guitars, at turns conveying an atmosphere of spaciousness and confinement. North’s silken vocals evoke the mysteries and possibilities of a vast universe. “Caught inside your head, what can you do? / trying not to let this get to you,” she ponders and in that instant becomes the guide to your space travel fever dream. Are those thudding beats your own heart echoed back to you in the isolation of your space suit? Maybe.
“Fall Through” piques interest for Space Above’s forthcoming album announcement and as well as the trio’s upcoming remix of “Bridges” by fellow NZ electronic artists BROODS.
