Fantastical creatures emerge from behind the scenes of a cross-hatched courtroom created by ¡Flist! as POP Montreal’s POP Shots reaches Episode 10.
The person in the dock is the appropriately named composer and visual artist Charlie Twitch, who convulses and contorts in the dock - his alien rhythm section laying down sinister, brooding post-punk funk.
Twist himself describes ¡Flist! as “Dark Soul. High Camp”.
Having spent 8 years crafting the fantastically named album F*ck You I’m Dead, he released it on his own label Art Not Love in 2014. Less a record and more a personal obsession, the album sees Twist trying to fuse the voices of his heroes (including “Stravinsky, Belafonte…Mark E. Smith, Lydia Lunch, M.I.A and Busta Rhymes.”) The record itself reflects all of these influences and more, Twist’s brooding barritone flitting between wounded croon and bile spitting fervour—recalling the likes of Birthday Party-era Nick Cave and Lux Interior.
