Jef E Barbara's "Sexe Machin / Sex Machine" produces sultry sounds for the twilight hours
Montreal’s Jef Elise Barbara have returned just in time for a long, hot, summer.
The sultry sound of new single "Sexe Machin / Sex Machine" could well be the perfect soundtrack for those close, twilight hours as the sun goes down and the night time begins.
Marking their first release since 2013’s Soft To The Touch, the track is a collaboration with Toulouse-based producer Pieuvre. Riding on an infectious, bouncing bassline, Barbara infuses the track with their love of the darkest elements of pop, disco, and '90s R&B, as they turn their back on a lover who's been running around town. Synths burble and phase in and out while Barbara’s bilingual croon hangs above it all with an icy, empowered cool.
The track was pieced together from guitar and synth parts sent across the Atlantic, with Barbara adding layers of organ and vocals at Montreal’s all-analog Bottle Green studio, home to Fixture Records label mates Freelove Fenner. The final piece was mixed to tape by Peter Woodford and Caitlin Loney of the band, past collaborators who were also recruited for the B-side, a cover of Michael Angelo’s “Sorcerer’s Delight”.
"Sexe Machin / Sex Machine" will be released as a limited 7” and download on 13 May via Fixture Records.
