Ah, the oft tread path of The Earnest Male Singer-Songwriter. A well of mediocrity and pained expression, juxtaposed with bland production and predictable product placements galore. What makes for a genuinely thrilling and enticing new artist in such an overcrowded genre? Answers on a postcard please.
London based Luke Sital-Singh has recently released three teaser tracks from his forthcoming debut EP - Fail For You - over on SoundCloud. All three more than worthy of your time, however it’s ‘Honest Man’ that really pulls at those heartstrings. Ryan Adams (circa Heartbreaker if we’re being specific) is the obvious touchstone here – both in timbre and vocal delivery – but it’s the spare, delicate production that Sital-Singh gently brings to the fore; grabbing you by the jugular with a warm embrace and smoky delivery. “Too beautiful and out of reach” he sings, regretfully, over a bed of subtle harmonies and lilting piano. It’s all rather moving stuff and makes you wish The O.C still existed, if only to soundtrack a “Seth Cohen In Downtrodden Emo Mode” scene.
Luke Sital-Singh plays Camden’s Proud on Thursday 12 July.
