Experienced London-based producer/musician Oli Bayston (aka Boxed In) debuted one of our favourite tracks of the latter end of 2013 with “All Your Love Is Gone”. Now he’s back with another piece of assured piano pop in “No Joke”.
Besides his work playing keyboards for the likes of Willy Mason or writing songs for The 2 Bears and Rosie Lowe, Bayston is a talented artist in his own right, no better displayed than on this creeping earworm of a single.
A bouncy spaghetti house beat, 90s motif piano, Bayston’s curled vocal and misshapen synth wobbles accumulate to represent something not too far removed from Hot Chip’s imaginative indietronica. It’s perfect piano pop given the electronica once over; enough weird and enough wonderful.
The accompanying video was filmed by a photographer friend on a trip to India, which features The Kolcata Laughing Society on one of their uplifting morning ‘routines’. Watch below:
Boxed In’s debut full-length release is yet to be announced (via his new signing to Nettwerk Records). “No Joke” is available as a free download now.
