Currently on heavy rotation at TLOBF towers (my ipod) is the self titled debut by Montreal outfit Young Galaxy. Their lush blend of shoe-gazing harmonies and pop hooks had me by the short and curlies from the very moment I heard album opener “Swing Your Heartache”. Here at TLOBF, we always like to get to know our new favourite bands a little better so we caught up with one half of the cosmic pair Stephen Ramsay to find out what exactly makes him tick. According to the answers given; Samurai’s, Dildo’s (double ended) and Funkadelic are at the top of the list. Oh, and he gave the best Stoat/Goat answer we’ve ever had, so major kudos is deserved.
1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Massive platinum orgasm.
2. What would be your ideal holiday?
Time-traveling as a samurai to feudal Japan while on pure MDMA.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Sex and bread products.
4. What’s on your rider?
A gelato stand, a riding lawnmower, 5 creatures who like to hang, Pimm’s No. 1 Cup, a white, double-ended dildo… you know, the usuals.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
Drinking heavily for a short period of time.
6. What’s your favourite song to play live?
Our new songs, “Light Years” and one tentatively titled “Cauldron Of Jazz – Saga Of The Barf Wolf”.
7. When was the last time you told a lie?
During the last question, it seems!
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
Great question. After extensive research, I have to pick the goat as the winner, unless the fight occurs at night. The stoat has superior night vision, and could use swarming tactics to smother its opponent. But ultimately the goat holds the key to this epic confrontation – namely, it’s rough tongue could be used to lick the stoat’s fur from it’s back, leaving the stoat exposed to the harsh sub-arctic conditions in which they are obviously fighting.
9. What was the last album you bought?
Studio – Yearbook 1. Absolute genius from out of nowhere. Album of the year by a country mile.
10. If you could rid the world of one song – what would it be?
What’s in the top 10 right now?
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Christopher Lee.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival.
The Stones during the ‘Exile’ years
Jesus and Mary Chain during the ‘Psychocandy’ years
David Bowie during the “Thin White Duke’ years
The Amnesia DJ’s from Ibitha, 1987/8
Parliament/Funkadelic during the ‘Mothership’ years
13. Desert Island Disc? Pick only one.
The Staples Singers – Uncloudy Day
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Driving for 4 days in a row from Montreal to Seattle to play our first show ever last winter. It was during the worst snowstorm in 20 years in Western Canada, and we drove for 48 hours straight at one point. It was completely ridiculous – we had to pry our fingers out of the dash by the end it was so tense. 6 inches of ice on the road for a thousand miles! Cars were just peeling off into the ditch all around us. It was apocalyptic. To top it off – when we finally played the show, my fly was down during our whole set. A kind girl in the audience pointed it out to me between songs. Devastating. I remember it fondly…
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Family time. Foreign sunsets. Musical revelations. Falling in love with C. Nothing surprising.
16. File sharing and Myspace – Sign me up or cold shoulder?
Cold shoulder. The interview ban begins after this one, right here… We’re going underground.
17. If you had to leave a body part to science, what would it be?
Cheeky bugger!
18. What’s the best book you’ve read and film you’ve seen in the last 6 months?
Book: ‘The Accident’ by Ali Smith
Film: ‘Madame Tutli-Putli’ by our friends, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski. It won the animated short prize at Cannes and it’s fucking genius.
19. What three things could you not live without?
Email. Baby animals. Gelato stand.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I have compound eyes. Instead of one lens I see through two spheres with many lenses. But apart from that I also have an extra single lens eye on the front of my head. Each lens of the compound eye catches it’s own image. The final image I see is like a mosaic. My two large spherical eyes give me almost complete 360 degree vision.
