John Vanderslice has been a busy man of late. Not only has he released the fantastic Emerald City he has also just completed possibly the first ever ‘video blog tour‘. A novel idea which saw John Vanderslice and his band make live in-studio performance videos of each of the tracks from the new album and post them on some of the best music blogs out there. Clever eh? So we thought, how can we get in on the action? Obviously there was only one way to go. 20 Questions time….
1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Distressed, harmonious, intentional.
2. What would be your ideal holiday?
Kauai or Creuse, France.
3. Whats the best cure for a hangover?
Oxycontin.
4. What’s on your rider?
Water and beer. Almost nothing else, they just buy stuff and charge us double.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
I get very nervous and pace around. It must be some kind of necessary preparation. If i don’t get nervous i usually don’t play as well.
6. Favourite song to play live?
Up Above The Sea
7. When was the last time you told a lie?
Earlier today. Isn’t that the same for everyone?
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
A goat, come on!!!
9. What was the last album you bought?
Lil’ Wayne – Da Drought 3
10. If you could rid the world of one song – what would it be?
All songs are sacred!!!
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Jonah hill, star of Superbad

14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Giving a $200+ tip to a delivery guy in Phoenix who brought us a pizza on stage.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
The time i spent in love and playing music. Australia, Thailand, starting Tiny Telephone. My mom.
16. Do you read your own reviews?
No. Once i finish a record it belongs to the ether.
17. Are you a morning bird or a night fox?
Morning bird for sure. Unless i’m on tour, then i’m definitely a night fox.
18. If you could travel back in time where would you set the dial?
2006, i’ve been happiest in the past two years.
19. What three things could you not live without?
Isabelle Fix, Turner classic movies, the internet.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
I love gardening. I probably think about it more than touring.
