From fronting the sublime Million Dead to his unplugged and folk-tinged solo debut, Frank Turner is one of the most important singer/songwriters currently touring the UK. We caught up with him recently to put to him our 20 Questions… who’d have thought he’d have it in for Fergie (no, not that Fergie)…
1. Describe your sound in 3 words.
Angry English Folk.
2. What would be your ideal holiday?
Going to the middle of the Scottish Highlands with a bunch of friends and some instruments. And Regina Spektor.
3. What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Hair of the dog.
4. What’s on your rider?
Whisky. I can’t drink beer. And crisps.
5. How do you get ready for a live show?
Warm up my vocals, have a few drinks, tune my guitar.
6. Favourite song to play live?
Hmm. Usually the most recent one I’ve finished writing, as it’s fresher for me.
7. When was the last time you told a lie?
Yesterday.
8. Who would win in a fight, a stoat or a goat and why?
A stoat, they’re more vicious.
9. What was the last album you bought?
Public Relations Exercise – “Come You Are Safe We Are From The Bombs”. It fucking rules.
10. If you could rid the world of one song – what would it be?
“My Humps”. FuuuuUUUuUuUck off.
11. Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
That guy who plays the commentator in “Best In Show”. He’s nothing like me but he’s a fucking genius. It’d be hilarious.
12. Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival.
Nirvana, Refused, Ryan Adams, Counting Crows, The Prodigy.
13. Desert Island Disc? Pick only one.
Hmm… Impossible question! Maybe “Heartbreaker” by Ryan Adams.
14. What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Hahaha, too many to mention. Maybe getting utterly wrecked with ex-members of Minor Threat at Leeds Festival a few years ago. That was pretty weird.
15. If your life flashed before your eyes, what would be the highlights?
Mostly some shows – Reading & Leeds, selling out the Garage in London (my home venue really), meeting some of my heroes, and then just some of the good times with my friends.
16. Do you read your own reviews?
Sometimes. Not religiously.
17. Are you a morning bird or a night fox?
Night fox for sure. I often see the mornings, but from the wrong end of the telescope, if you see what i mean.
18. If you could travel back in time where would you set the dial?
The inter-war period, 1920’s and 30’s. The most interesting period of history, politically and culturally, in my opinion. I’d like to meet Christopher Isherwood and Curzio Malaparte.
19. What three things could you not live without?
Cheese. Whisky. Music.
20. Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.
Hm… I got to grade 2 on the harp when I was a kid, but my career as a harpist was derailed by discovering Iron Maiden and electric guitars.
