Track By Track: TEEN on their genre-melding third record, Love Yes

17 March 2016, 16:45

TEEN - those magpie borrowers of pop - returned last month with the release of their wonderful new album, Love Yes.

In our review, Jon Putnam says the Brooklyn four piece go in hard on "‘80s synthpop, tossing in turn of the decade R&B flavours and shades of Prince’s rock/pop/R&B genre melding."

But what does TEEN frontwoman Teeny Lieberson have to say about the tracks on the new album?

Stream the record and read her explanations, which range from murder fantasies to female lust, in the guide below.

Tokyo

This song is about a man losing interest in his wife and the normality of his mundane life. He dreams of something larger, something fantastic: a youthful woman waiting for him in Tokyo.

All About Us

A song about the micro aggressions many women face everyday- the idea that because someone is a “modern man” he cannot be sexist or privy to digesting the culture of sexism that surrounds him.

Gone For Good

A love song - a woman laments losing a love that was never really hers.

Another Man’s Woman

This is a story about the idea of finding your secure love, something that is suitable to your life, but then falling in love with the possibility of another. It explores what ifs, and the many ways a person can choose to live their lives.

Example

This song is about an empire collapsing. How can a nation set an example when their ideals are imperialistic, impractical and unjust?

Animal

"Animal" actually started as more of a folk song. It was just guitar and me singing. But it just wasn't working. I had built this crazy sound on my Moog Voyager and basically reworked the whole thing and it became something entirely different. Something way more exciting. I feel like I needed to write a song with that kind of energy.

The song itself is about a man I was with for a very long time. Well it's actually more about a period of time after we broke up. I felt like I was completely stuck in the past. Re-living all the moments that went wrong, of what was good about us, what he meant to me etc. every single day. I felt like I was regressing because all I could do was pay attention to my basic instincts and needs. Any other thought or complex emotion I felt I tried to ignore or more like drown in alcohol. Although really hard, it actually has been a really interesting and open time in my life. Honestly, I'm so thankful he dumped me.

Free Time

A woman is framed by the man she is dating and goes to jail. She fantasises about killing him and when she is finally free, she will execute this fantasy. She dreams of all the things she missed while being imprisoned and she swears to get her innocence back.

Superhuman

"Superhuman" explores the depths of female sexuality, how I believe we have universal needs. What if there is no difference in flavour and impulse in men and women? If a women yearns to be animalistic in her sexual desires, does that diminish her integrity? Does embodying their humanity make them a lesser being?

Please

I wrote this song last winter in upstate NY. My father passed away a few years ago and I think even now I'm still processing it. That winter had been particularly for me and on the day I wrote it I decided to go out walking in the middle of a snow storm. I brought a notebook with me and wrote the lyrics while I was walking. I came back to the house where we were staying and recorded a demo. I brought it to my band I think the next day.

Noise Shift

An ode to NYC and my love/hate relationship with the city. The smells, the noise that gets in your head - I’m always relieved to get away from it and happy to get back to it.

Love Yes

This is about saying yes to all of all bodily and sensual desires..embracing the desirable self.

Push

"Push" talks about the urgency that can come up for women in their lives when considering family- how their body has a timeline and the difference between this male/female reality.

Love Yes is out now on Carpark Records.
